FACTS about FASFA

Formed in September 2000
Launched in January 2001 at Fishmongers Hall, London Association of Trawler owners, Importers and Distributors of Frozen at Sea Fillets Members from UK, Iceland, Norway Faeroe Islands Base in Hull

Objective to promote Frozen at Sea Fillets of Cod, Haddock and Saithe(Coley)
Only body actively countering comments of doom about Cod
Provides positive information about supply of Cod from Barents Sea and Iceland
Supported by Seafish Industry Authority(SFIA)
Received funds from FIFG (EU) & Defra

Don’t know of any restaurants using FAS, but plenty of Fish & Chip shops do and will admit it.
Plenty of Fish & Chip shops use FAS and do not admit it.

FACTS about FAS Trawlers

Most FAS trawlers are between 50m & 70m long
Crews numbers between 28 and 45 depending on size and flag country
Approx 85 Vessels are operated by companies based in Norway(16), Iceland(32), Faeroe Islands (5),UK(2), Russia(24), Germany(4), France(1) and Spain(3).
Areas of operation Icelandic waters and Barents Sea(north of Russia and Norway).

Species caught in these waters Cod, Haddock, Saithe, Greenland Halibut, Redfish

 

Availability

Approx 50,000 tonnes of fillets of Cod
15,000 tonnes of fillets of Haddock

Other white fish species, Hake and Hoki from the southern hemisphere are also available in frozen at sea fillet form. The tonnages are relatively small.
